“But what’s with the name?”

That’s the first question I always get. Long before it was Delray, the settlement here was called Linton, and early farmers planted pineapples, tomatoes and beans. After the Florida East Coast Railway arrived, Delray grew into a farming town shipping pineapples north by rail. So the name is a nod to the crop that helped put this town on the map.

“Great, Kurt, thanks for the history lesson, but I’m looking to buy, not run for commissioner!” Fair enough, but one more bit, because it explains why this street feels the way it does. In the early 1990s, property owners and residents approached the city with the idea of an arts district to revitalize the area.

The NE 2nd Avenue corridor was rebuilt as “Pineapple Grove Way,” with paver crosswalks and sidewalks, roundabouts and decorative lighting, and public sculpture was commissioned along the street. It’s still one of the most involved communities in town.

The Downtown Development Authority describes the Pineapple Grove Arts District as running north to NE 4th Street, between Swinton Avenue on the west and NE 4th Avenue on the east.

Condos and townhomes in Pineapple Grove

Pineapple Grove has a few mainstays that buyers ask me about all the time:

  • The Astor (225 & 235 NE 1st Street): a two-building mid-rise with garage parking and a rooftop pool.
  • City Walk at Pineapple Grove (200 NE 2nd Avenue): condos right on Pineapple Grove Way, steps from Atlantic Avenue.
  • Cannery Row (Cannery Row Circle, off NE 2nd Avenue): three-story, 3-bedroom townhomes with 2-car garages and a community pool, built in the 2010s.

Every building has its own association fees, rules and pet policies, so ask for the current budget and documents before you make an offer, especially with Florida’s newer condo safety and reserve requirements.

Homes near Pineapple Grove

Don’t like multi-family living? Step a block west to Banker’s Row, where 1920s Mediterranean Revival homes line the west side of NE 1st Avenue and 1930s cottages line the east side. Head north up NE 2nd Avenue, which turns into Seacrest Boulevard, and go a block or two east or west, and you’ll find single-family streets.

Many of those houses are CBS (concrete block and stucco), a kind of construction that really stands the test of time. Common upgrades are new kitchens, updated baths, and hurricane improvements like a new roof and impact windows, which also help with insurance. Most of these streets have no HOA.

I won’t quote my old 2012 prices, because they’d only make you sad. To see what’s for sale today, search all active 33444 listings or set up alerts with our VIP home search.

Lifestyle

This is downtown living at its best. You can walk to coffee, galleries, dinner on Atlantic Avenue, or a show at the Arts Garage, and it’s not uncommon to find yourself driving behind a golf cart, a favorite way for locals to get around. Wouldn’t it be great to run down for dinner or coffee in a golf cart? Now that’s what I call Florida living.
